Start your day with a protein punch

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You’ve heard this, right? Do you know what it really means? Take a look at the word – break, fast. Essentially, you are breaking your overnight fast with that morning meal (or not). This matters because you need to fuel your body quickly but solidly to get it going in the right way first thing in the morning. This is your chance to jump start your metabolism as well as stabilize your mood which can last the entire day regardless of what you have for lunch. By giving your body food at the beginning of the day, your metabolism (and ability to burn energy) is either revved up or grinds to a halt. Additionally, your mood is affected because your blood sugar will be altered. Stable blood sugar, stable mood.

The best choice here is a breakfast of quality building blocks that will get your motor running smoothly so you have a productive, pleasant day. And your kids have a productive, pleasant day. Their teachers will thank you.

You need protein and you need to eat within 1.5 hours of waking up. No, coffee with cream does not count…!

Here are some high protein ideas to jump start your day.

Eggs * Greek yogurt * Nut butters * Oatmeal * Quinoa

Simple Quinoa Porridge

1 cup water
1/2 cup quinoa (well rinsed)
Combine quinoa and water in a pot and bring to the boil.
Reduce the heat – cover and cook for 10 minutes until soft.
Time saver tip – do this step the night before.

1 cup milk of your choice
2 apples, chopped or grated with skin (optional)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (excellent for stabilizing your blood sugar)
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed

Add milk, apple, cinnamon, seeds and vanilla.
Simmer for 5 minutes until creamy – add more milk if needed for a creamier texture.
Spoon into serving bowls and enjoy.

Serving tip: Top with extra fruit like sliced banana or drizzle with pure maple syrup.
